Summer is in full force in Fernie, and with the new Fernie Mountain Bike Guide coming this July, cruising the trails will be better than ever!

A few weeks ago after riding Swine Flu, a trail with an attraction that has spread like a disease, I was heading to Essential Yoga Studio for Core Class, only to find out it was cancelled. Boo, there goes my cross training! I could have hit the gym... but obviously I chose the trails. Tired of riding solo, I went by a friend's to see where they were heading.

Emily Brydon finished off her impressive career in Nakiska at Nationals this March, winning her tenth National Championship, skiing the Dual Slalom in "style", and celebrating alongside her teammates with BC/DC at COP and onto Ceili's Pub for the evening. To say she was exhausted is an understatement, to say she was excited about what the future holds equally so...particularly the immediate future.

It all started a few years ago on a Brodie Bruzza - a freeride mountain bike so obviously not suited for me but it was just the right price. I had recently moved back to Fernie after nearly eight pasty years between Uni and working in a cubicle under hideous fluorescent lights. It was time to get back into mountain life, and mountain biking seemed like the thing to do.

We decide against attempting the bus system when we finally reach downtown Vancouver. Our shoulders are aching, we're starving and parched, so settle in at a street side cafe (taking up nearly the entire place with our "luggage") and make a weak attempt at eating healthy and re-hydrating. Erin heads outside and a friendly doorman hails us a taxi, whom takes us out of the hustle and bustle of the City to the quiet and quaint Kitsilano.

In like a lamb, out like a lion?

So, where was I. Ah yes, Tokyo Toms...
I shuffle into one of the tatami rooms thinking I have found a safe zone. With Erin to my right and Julie Langevin to my left, I relax a little. Erin's on Gorb watch, so hopefully I'm safe. The "kegs" of Asahi and litres of sake make their rounds, and Emily is in true form, spending time with each and every guest. Under the influence of sake and in awe of my Olympic friend, I make the poor decision of leaving my comfort zone to encapsulate the moment. It's a little too embarrassing to divulge particulars, but let's just say the gentleman in the following picture was just some dude looking to get into a shot with Emily Brydon. Oops, sorry Brian! Gorb move number one.

It's midnight on Thursday evening. The Fix has just gone to press, and I'm frantically packing for a six day Olympic adventure. I somehow manage to catch a couple hours of sleep, a training run for our ensuing Olympic performances. I pick up Erin, we grab our coffee for the road, and talk and giggle like a couple of school girls all the way to Cranbrook. It's starting to sink in, we're going to the Olympics!

Why does Fernie support Emily so passionately? Here are a couple of recent scenarios that perfectly epitomize Emily. When she discovered that she could attend the opening ceremonies she was so excited and texted to let us know. "We'll be watching for you at the Brickhouse! They're throwing a party to raise funds for your foundation," we respond. And what does she say? "I wish I was there with you guys..."

Emily Brydon's first race is this Sunday - the Ladies Super Combined. Training runs for placement are on the 11th and 12th, with the Downhill (2pm) and Slalom (5pm) on the 14th. CTV has collaborated with Fernie Alpine Resort to show the world our support LIVE!

Recently Advocates for Local Living in Fernie posted the following quote on their Facebook page:

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world...indeed it’s the only thing that ever has."
Margaret Mead

I'll never doubt again. Fernie rocks.

Saturday began bright and early with the ringing of church bells, a wake up call to the residents of Fernie - the Torch was on its way. We fought the comforts of sleep to see the Olympic Torch, which many hadn't seen since 1988 or were about to see for the first time. Coffee in hand and wearing bright red Olympic mittens, we set off in the darkness to catch the parade, not quite sure what festivities were in store.

January is typically assumed as being a slower month in Fernie, a little breather after the hustle and bustle of the holidays. But after this week I will no longer believe this to be true...and I will no longer make assumptions.

A definite highlight during the holidays was a charity hockey game between Ghostriders, past and present. The event raised funds for Mike Rousselle and his family. Mike’s smile, laughter and generosity have touched many over the years and when the community learned of his recent trials and tribulations after miraculously surviving a severe electricity accident, they came together without hesitation.

December 2009 022.JPGFrom the Ice Gala to Lake Louise, this weekend there was definitely a lot of Silver...and one Bronze!

rosemary_krista.jpgMany of our advertisers had kindly donated prizes to give away, and when Vanessa and I discovered that the Emily Brydon Youth Foundation had recently turned down their first applicants EVER, we decided to sell raffle tickets to raise funds.

DSC00761_0.jpgFernie looked like a winter wonderland, not a common site in December, let alone November. Sure, many of us have had the privilege of wearing Halloween costumes over one piece snow suits in late October, but those days are gone….right? Well, maybe not as long gone as previously assumed.
