It was a Monday night, a night I normally spend at home in anticipation of the week to come...but not this week. A fundraiser was taking place at the Corner Pocket for Lily, a golden retriever. Lily is a Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog that alongside handler Kirk Gutzman has spent countless hours training and working in the Fernie community over the last six years. When word spread that Lily was diagnosed with cancer, it sparked a need to help within the community, particularly in Maren of Barkside Pets. She immediately started a foundation to help Lily and other pets in need of financial support. This was the first of many fundraisers for the foundation, and apparently was great motivation to get off the couch.

Corner Pocket was packed! They sold over 175 dinners that evening, half of which was donated to the foundation. The silent auction and raffle were a hit and an emotional Kirk made a quick and meaningful speech at the end of the evening to show his genuine appreciation for the support they have received. Kirk and Lily are on their way to the Olympics next week to be part of the search and rescue division of security. (Read more about their story in the Fernie at the Olympics article in this month's issue of the Fix) In all the event raised over $5000, impressive to say the least.

Recently I caught wind of another event taking place in town, not surprisingly a fundraiser as well. Local band Shred Kelly were excited when they booked a gig at the Olympics, but how would they afford to get there? Tim Newton runs Jam Night at the Brickhouse every Thursday and had discussed his dilemma with bar manager Paula Turcasso (yes, my sister). Paula was in the process of organizing a party to celebrate the opening ceremonies on February 12. The duo put their heads together and voila - a party that will both entertain and raise money for Shred Kelly and the Emily Brydon Youth Foundation. Music by Shred Kelly and guests Ben Hur, door prizes, including cat skiing at Fernie Wilderness Adventures, the opportunity to taste Emily Brydon's meal of choice - a portion of which will be donated to her foundation with every meal ordered during the Olympics - and that's just the beginning.
Recently Advocates for Local Living in Fernie posted the following quote on their Facebook page:
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world...indeed it’s the only thing that ever has."
Margaret Mead
I'll never doubt again. Fernie rocks.
