Summer Socializing

I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June.
~ L. M. Montgomery
If you’ve read Anne of Green Gables, this quote from the famous Canadian author doesn’t surprise you. The kindred spirits of this famous series often rejoice at summer’s fresh beginnings, holding hands as they run through the landscape of the famed Prince Edward Island.
This sentiment is one most Canadians probably identify with, and perhaps Fernie residents even more so after last winter season. It was one of epic proportions, with no end in site as we continued to deal with its remnants throughout the spring, choosing skis over bikes as late as May. But naturally, green grass appeared, flowers bloomed, trails became uncovered, and people curiously left their winter refuges in search of a little Vitamin D and summer socializing.
It seems as though this trend has been recognized as Fernie summers have turned into the social affair of the year. Where once families would leave town on vacation at the sound of the school bell at the end of June, now they choose their dates wisely, not daring to miss that favoured or new event on their hit list.
We couldn’t be more excited about this upcoming summer. It is our fifth publishing the Fernie Fix and while we have noticed this trend developing, it is most definitely reached an encouraging level. What I love most about the lineup though is its diversity - there is something for everyone. Take this month for example. Beginning with the popular fundraiser Relay for Life, a little culture provided by the Arts & Letters Gala, some competition brought to us by the golf course and disc golf course, leading up to a new Fernie race, the Furious3. And that’s just the beginning.
Just another item to add to your “Reasons I’m Proud to Call Fernie Home” list. Have a fabulous June everyone, it looks like we’ll all be seeing a lot of one another throughout the next few months summer socializing.
