Photos that Embody Community

The community of Fernie is special and unique for many reasons. One of the many bonds that tie people together is the sports we choose. And Fernie, as we all know, is a playground, providing many opportunities for individuals to become part of a group that share the same interests. This photo was taken at the Ghostrider Wave just north of Fernie on the Elk River. This not-so-secret spot draws paddlers and surfers alike in the spring when the water levels are high. It is fun to see the familiar faces year after year as we congregate to this special place for one month when the wave surfaces. In this photo are local members of the Fernie wave surfing community (from L to R) Tommy Westcott, Shon Cottrill, Mark Hall, Pat Demers, and Leilani Hall (surfing the wave).

Fernie is one of those towns that has it all - epic snow, amazing biking, world class fishing and hiking, and a strong community to pull it all together. Each fall the community comes together for the annual Soap Box Derby, in this photo Anja Kujt gets a front row view as her sister Fynley prepares to descend the course.

Fernie's community is the product of the people who have chosen Fernie as a home. Like a trip down 2nd Ave that takes half an hour, it’s not one experience, but an accumulation of interactions and shared interests. I was lucky to have experienced a hike above Island Lake Lodge with Steve Kujit. He shared his stories of the mountains – the details of geography, the paths of the snow, stories of the people who had explored and worked on them, and from the top, Fernie’s connection to the land around us – the pass, south to the States, west to Cranbrook and beyond. This photo is from April, when he welcomed the Fernie Nordic Society. After the kids raced and (wisely) before lunch, he treated all the kids to his special flip, captured in this photo.
