Photographs that Inspire Environmental Awareness

“This photo was taken last summer when Koocanusa was at a really low water level. The other parts of the tractor date it back to the 1930's or 40's. To me, it was a significant reminder that our impacts today will be around for many generations to come, and that we can't just put our waste ‘out of sight, out of mind’.”

“When I think of what inspires environmental awareness in me, I look to the beauty of nature and the mystery of wildlife. This photograph of a Northern Hawk Owl was taken in the Southern Rockies in the sub-alpine forest, on Morrisey Ridge near Fernie BC. The nomadic Northern Hawk Owl is a true survivor, resilient, responsive and adaptive to its environment. Sensitivity to environment depends on weather and prey availability. Fernie is located at the very southern end of the Northern Hawk Owls range. It is possible that this bird has flown south in search of prey. Southward irruptions occur when vole numbers in the north crash. This Northern Hawk Owl's appearance in Fernie inspires environmental awareness with her adaptability to changes in her environment. As humans we too must adapt to a changing world, and do all we can to reduce our influence on natural cycles.”

"I chose this photo for the green issue because it is probably the least green photo I have ever taken. Most people don't realize how much fuel is consumed with action sports photography. This shot took two diesel burning snow cats, one gas burning snowmobile, and 40 minutes of helicopter jet fuel to capture."
