Feature Artist - Nic Genovese

My name is Nic Genovese and I am a freelance Photo/Videographer born and raised in Fernie BC. I am also currently enrolled in the New Media BA program at the University of Lethbridge. Media Arts has been a passion of mine ever since I can remember. I guess you could say it all started with taking pictures of my friends riding their bikes on the many biking trails in and around Fernie. My dad would let me use his digital camera and my friends and I would go out day after day and ride, then come home to see the pictures that we had captured throughout the day. After a solid few summers of using and wearing out my dad’s camera, I decided to buy my own. I saved up enough money babysitting and mowing people’s lawns to buy MY first camera and I took off from there.
After the first summer with my new camera, I shot my first short film called Fernie Boys. It was a 20 minute video documenting mine and my friends mountain biking adventures. The following summer Fernie Boys won Best Film at the Fernie Full Throttle Film contest. I was really stoked about that.
After graduating from Fernie Secondary, I wasn’t quite ready to hit the books again right away and decided to travel. That winter I went to Australia for six months and worked as a bike tech at a beach resort near Sydney called Manly. During my stay I bought my first SLR camera, and took a gazillion photos of my new environment. My trip to Australia broadened my perspective on life and reinforced my passion to be a photographer. After returning from Australia, I decided to kick it into gear and start to turn my hobby into a career. I returned in May and almost immediately started to take pictures and make videos again. Within the first week of being back I received the “Photo of the Day” on Pinkbike.com, a premier Mountain Biking webzine. This was a huge personal accomplishment for me as I looked at that site daily dreaming of one day being able to receive the “Photo of the day”. Towards the end of last summer I filmed/produced a Promotional video for a good my friend of mine, Scott Alleyn a pro mountain biker from Kimberley, BC. His exceptional riding ability helped me greatly as our video received “Video of the Day” on Pinkbike on November 17, 2010 which now has over 37,000 views.
After attending my first semester at the University of Lethbridge in the New Media Program, I am back in Fernie for the summer. Fernie is such a great environment because there is so much potential for me to shoot photos and videos. Another huge plus is having my brother Paul to shoot with. He shares the same passion and is a very talented and skillful mountain biker. His ability on a bike and my skills behind a lens makes an awesome combination for the both of us. Not many people have the opportunity to film a keen bike rider whenever they want in Canada's arguably most beautiful place. I have been hired by Paul’s biking sponsors to shoot monthly videos for their websites which keeps me busy after work at the bike shop. Oh yea, when I’m not in school, I work as a bike tech at Straightline during the summer months and have been working there on and off since 2006.
My plan is to continue shooting both photos and videos, mainly focusing on capturing sports while keeping my options open to new and innovative ideas in other aspects of video/photography. Here are some samples of my most current work, and you can find more at:
