Editor's Fix - 'Tis the Season

When weighing the scales summer wins over winter for me. Partially because of a love affair with a particular mode of mountain transportation (biking) and partially because I like to be warm. (As you’ve probably guessed the biking portion of that pie has the bigger slice.)

Recently a friend who shares the same passion for two wheels suggested living where I could bike all year. To her surprise I immediately retorted, "No way!” I forgave her for the oversight, but seriously… I’m a Fernie girl! While mountain biking has my heart I don’t think I would have the same feelings towards it without a break each year. Time to enjoy skiing powder, cross country skiing in the wilderness, snow shoeing to the mountain tops… time to listen to the snow crunching beneath my feet while walking in the glow of the streetlights as big, puffy flakes make their way to the ground… and sufficient time to get frustrated with the ol’ trainer in the living room and busy times at the gym.

On the flip side, imagine snow all year. Would we still be feeling the buzz that accompanies December? The opening of the ski hill would no longer bring early celebrations to the month. Snow falling on Christmas Eve, just another day. Post holing it in deep powder while out hunting down that Christmas tree, no big deal. Cocoa in front of the fire place… okay, maybe that would never get old.

The seasons are a beautiful thing to experience, bringing with them a deep appreciation and child-like excitement. We hope this edition of the Fernie Fix heightens this experience as you make your way through the first month of the winter season. Here’s to a safe, generous and happy holiday season.
